A Message From Team Navy
Sean Smith (Sean.smith@grmok.org), Rescue Director of Gospel Rescue Mission, is representing Navy.
Sean arrived at Navy Recruit Training Center Great Lakes, Illinois on August 2nd 1993. Having opted to drop out of High School and get a GED instead, Sean was a young man with little to no confidence, devoid of any goals, and desperately low on self-motivation. Soon the Navy would change all of that.
Being promoted to Seaman Apprentice out of boot camp for having excelled in academics, a vision began to form in this young sailor's mind. He then continued to Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, where he attended MM/BT “A” school and attained the navy rating of Machinist Mate, and a promotion to Fireman, again for excelling in academics. It was at this time Sean realized that the United States Navy offered more than just a paycheck. He began to dream about a career of service, where he could grow and learn to lead as well.
When all was said and done, his career spanned 24 years. He had traveled to more than 30 countries; serving aboard a nuclear submarine, a Guided Missile Destroyer, and multiple amphibious assault ships. Over a span of 2 dozen years, he had fought in two separate wars, taught Department Head students at Surface Warfare Officer School Command, and attained the coveted rank of Chief Petty Officer.
Looking back, Sean can attest to the fact that even in the most difficult of circumstances, both military and civilian alike, the core values he learned through the Navy ethos of “Honor, Courage, and Commitment” have served him well, carrying him through many a dark and stormy night both on land and the high seas.
So, if on December 14th you find yourself wondering, “who should be the anchor for my chants of “One Team-One Fight!” Well, look no further than the proud colors of Navy Blue and Gold!! Once again, just as in the majority of years past, the Navy Midshipmen will surely rise to our Nations call and bring home those bragging rights!
